Performing with Integritysay yes to occ

Name: Mike Hansen

Position: Vice President, National Operations

What made you say “yes” to OCC?

The opportunity to be a part of a brand new office and growing company was what lead me to say yes to the Options Clearing Corporation 15 years ago. Having the OCC as a regulator after 9/11, the SEC compelled OCC to find an alternate processing site, which led us to Dallas.

What can you find at OCC that you can’t find anywhere else?

As the world’s largest equity derivative clearinghouse, coupled with the fact that we’re a designated SIFMU (systematically important financial market utility), we’re put in a unique spot that presents both challenges and opportunities to us as an organization.

What are the benefits to OCC being in the Dallas Region?

One of the largest benefits to us being located in the Dallas Region is access to a very skilled and diverse workforce. We’re able to pull people with a lot of different experience. Another benefit is that a lot of our partners from within the industry, both clearing members or other organizations, have started to expand operations here in Dallas – specifically, Goldman Sachs, TD Ameritrade, and Charles Schwab. Companies like that, who we work with on a daily basis, have also found the benefit of expanding their operations here in the Dallas Region.

What does the OCC do to give back to the community?

OCC is very involved in charitable contribution. We have a charity group that’s responsible for putting on events and we have a charitable match program – for every dollar that employees raise, OCC is matching that dollar for dollar. Just this year, the Dallas office set an all-time record, compared to the past 15 years. We generated over $45,000, which is significantly higher than any other year for the past 15 years, and is a testament to the almost 200 folks here in the office who are a part of it.

If you could describe OCC in one word, what would it be?

There’s several words, but if there was just one word, I would look to our mission statement, and the one word I would pull out of that mission statement would be “integrity”. OCC operates in an environment where we have to provide clearance and settlement and risk management for all of our clearing members. Our clearing members, our regulators, everyone is reliant on OCC to perform that task on a daily basis with integrity.
